Day 1 — Saturday: Arrival in Cairo

You've just landed in Cairo. The air outside is warm and thick with the smell of dust and diesel and something older underneath it — incense, maybe, or just time itself. Customs is slow but painless, and the moment you step through the doors, you're met by our Egyptian guide, who has your name on a little sign and a smile that puts you instantly at ease. Your luggage disappears into the transfer van before you've even finished saying hello.

The drive into the city is a blur of car horns, minarets, and the first glimpse of the Nile catching the late afternoon light. Then - Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile. Right on the river, it's utterly beautiful. You check in, and for a moment you just stand in your room and breathe. There's time for a shower and a quiet lie-down before we all gather this evening for a welcome dinner — the first chance to meet the souls who'll be walking beside you for the next sixteen days. You already sense that some of these strangers won't feel like strangers for long.

Day 2 — Sunday: Old Cairo & the Matareya Garden

This morning we wander into Old Cairo together — narrow lanes, ancient churches, the layered history of a city that has never stopped being sacred. Then we travel to Heliopolis, to the Matareya Garden, where a quiet spring still flows in the place tradition holds that Mary and Joseph once rested with the infant Jesus on their flight into Egypt. We sit here a while. It's not a big, dramatic stop — it's a gentle one, and some of the most powerful moments of this trip will be the quiet ones. We lunch at an exotic palace location, and then the afternoon is yours: nap, journal, sit by the hotel pool with the Nile in view, or simply let the last of the jet lag drain out of your shoulders.

Day 3 — Monday: Saqqara & the Serapeum

Today you wake up early and we go deeper into the desert, to Saqqara — home of the Step Pyramid, the oldest of its kind in Egypt — and down into the Serapeum, where the sacred Apis bulls were entombed in granite sarcophagi so massive it's hard to believe human hands moved them. We'll also visit the newly established Museum of Ancient Civilizations. It's a full day of exploring, so we build in breathing room: a long lunch, air-conditioned coach transfers between sites, and an early return to the hotel so you have real downtime before dinner — maybe a swim, maybe just an early night.

Day 4 — Tuesday: Fly to Aswan 

We fly south this morning, and the landscape transforms beneath us — the sprawl of Cairo gives way to golden desert, then suddenly the Nile again, impossibly blue, threading through it. Aswan is unlike anywhere else we'll visit: palm trees line the corniche, white-sailed feluccas drift lazily across the water, and the pace of life visibly slows to match the current. As we settle in, you catch your first glimpses of ancient temple columns and pylons rising from islands out in the river — a preview of what we'll explore properly tomorrow. There's a surprise waiting for us today too, which I'll let unfold rather than spoil here.

Day 5 — Wednesday: The Temple of Philae

This morning we take a short boat ride out to Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis and rebuilt stone by stone on its own island when the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge it in the 1960s.

We'll meditate together at the ancient gate where pilgrims once entered two thousand years ago — and you'll feel why they came. The rest of the day is unstructured.

Aswan is made for lingering: a felucca sail at sunset, a wander through the souk for spices and scarves, or an afternoon by the pool with new friends, comparing notes on what you're each starting to feel move within you...

Day 6 — Thursday: Abu Simbel & the Sound and Light Show

A longer travel day, but worth every mile: we drive to Abu Simbel, on the edge of Lake Nasser, and check into the Seti Abu Simbel Resort right on the water. As evening falls, we gather for the Sound and Light Show at the temple — Ramesses II's colossal statues lit up against the dark, his story told in light across three-thousand-year-old stone. It's theatrical, yes, but it's also strangely moving, standing in the dark beside a monument built to outlast time itself.

Day 7 — Friday: Abu Simbel Temple & the Nile Cruise Begins

We rise early to beat the heat and walk through Abu Simbel Temple itself in the cool morning light, before the crowds arrive — and I'll share with you a secret about this temple that most visitors never learn. Then it's back in the coach to Aswan, where the Mövenpick cruise ship is waiting to welcome us aboard. Settle into your cabin, unpack properly for the first time in a week, and take an evening to simply watch the riverbanks slide by from the deck. Cruising the Nile has its own rhythm — slower, softer — and you'll feel your nervous system catch up to where your soul already is.

Day 8 — Saturday: Kom Ombo & Edfu

The ship carries us gently downriver as we visit two extraordinary temples: Kom Ombo, uniquely dedicated to two gods — Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon god — split symmetrically down its centre, and Edfu, one of the best-preserved temples in all of Egypt. Between temples, there's time to simply be on the water — reading on the sun deck, an afternoon nap as the engines hum beneath you, or quiet conversation with the people who are quickly becoming your Egypt family.

Day 9 — Sunday: Karnak & Luxor Temples

We dock at Luxor, ancient Thebes, and step into Karnak — the largest religious complex ever built by human hands, its avenue of ram-headed sphinxes leading toward pylons that dwarf you the moment you walk beneath them. In the softer evening light we visit Luxor Temple, its columns glowing gold as the sun drops. It's a big, awe-filled day, and you'll be glad to return to the ship for a quiet dinner and an early night — Luxor has more waiting for you tomorrow.

Day 10 — Monday: Abydos & the Osireion

Today we travel to Abydos for a private visit to the Temple of Seti and the mysterious Osireion below it, dedicated to Osiris, god of the eternal cycles of life, death and rebirth. We'll meditate here together — this is one of the most symbolically potent stops of the entire journey, a place that speaks directly to our own capacity for resurrection into greater light. We transfer to the Steigenberger Grand Palace in Luxor this evening, and after a day of deep inner work, a relaxed hotel dinner and an early night are exactly what's needed. Day 11 — Tuesday: Dendera & the Temple of Hathor

A day trip north to Dendera, to the temple of Hathor — goddess of love, healing, joy and motherhood. Her presence here is unmistakably warmer, softer than some of the more solemn sites we've visited. We'll take our time in her temple, letting her particular medicine do its quiet work. The afternoon is yours to rest at the hotel, swim, or wander into Luxor town for tea and people-watching before we regroup for dinner.

Day 12 —Wednesday: The West Bank, the Tombs & Hatshepsut's Temple

This morning we cross the Nile to the West Bank — the realm of the dead in ancient Egyptian cosmology, and one of the richest archaeological landscapes on Earth. We explore the Valley of the Kings and Queens, visit the extraordinary temple of Hatshepsut carved into the cliffs, and hear from a local Egyptologist about the history of this remarkable site, including Tutankhamun's tomb, discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. It's a full, moving day — bring water, wear your walking shoes, and know that an easy dinner and a proper rest are waiting for you back at the hotel.

Day 13 — Thursday: Fly to Cairo 

We fly back to Cairo today, and there's something poignant about returning to where we started, carrying everything we've gathered along the way. We check into the Hyatt Regency, Cairo West, and this evening is intentionally unstructured — a chance to process, to journal, to sit with everything Upper Egypt has stirred in you before the final, culminating days ahead.

Day 14 — Friday: The Sphinx & the Grand Egyptian Museum

This morning we meditate together in the quiet, between the paws of the Great Sphinx at Giza — a private moment before the site fills with visitors. In the afternoon, we visit the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum, home to the full Tutankhamun collection and treasures rarely seen until now. It's a lot to take in, so the evening is left free — a final wander, a quiet dinner, or simply resting up for tomorrow, which is the day this whole journey has been building toward.

Day 15 — Saturday: The King's Chamber & Mena House

Today is the heart of it all: a private, early-morning initiation meditation inside the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Giza. There are no words I can put here that will prepare you for it — it's something you simply need to feel for yourself, in your own body, in that exact space. Tonight we celebrate together at the historic Mena House hotel, with the Great Pyramid floodlit and enormous just beyond the pool. It's a joyful, full-hearted way to close the circle — toasting each other, and everything you've moved through together.

Day 16 — Sunday: Departure

This morning is soft and slow. There's time for one last coffee looking out at Cairo, one last exchange of contact details with people who no longer feel like people you met sixteen days ago. Transfers to the airport are arranged, and you head home carrying something that no photograph will quite capture — though you'll certainly try.

Tour Highlights

 

  • Stay for three nights at the 5-star Sofitel Hotel situated in the heart of Cairo beside the River Nile and right next door to the historic Egyptian Museum. 

 

  • Visit, meditate and rest by the sacred spring in the Matareya Garden in the Cairo suburb of Heliopolis. This is where Mary and Joseph stopped to rest with baby Jesus, when they came into the land of Egypt after escaping from Herod.

 

  • Stay at the Seti Abu Simbel Hotel on the shore of Lake Nasser, with an early morning visit to the Temple of Abu Simbel, constructed during the reign of Ramesses II, but with another ancient secret that we will discover together!

 

  • Visit Philae Temple, which is dedicated to the Goddess Isis and was rebuilt by UNESCO stone by stone when the Aswan High Dam was constructed in the 1960s. Meditate at the ancient sacred gate of the pilgrims, who once visited Philae 2,000 years ago. 

 

  • Relax as we cruise up the Nile from Aswan to Luxor on the 5-star Movenpick cruise ship. We will visit the temples of Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor and Karnak.

Health and Fitness Disclaimer: A reasonable level of health and fitness is required for this tour. There are a number of early morning starts and it gets hot during the day. If you have blood pressure, heart or kidney issues, or have difficulty walking short distances, please check with your medical adviser before registering. However, the trip is paced to allow adequate time for rest and relaxation.

Travel is by air conditioned deluxe bus and hotels and the cruise ship are 5-star. Your personal safety and wellbeing is a priority. Avatar Travel Disclaimer: In the unlikely event of global unrest, adverse weather conditions, regional or national restrictions in Egypt, or other extenuating circumstances that might affect the smooth operation of the tour, or necessitate the cancellation the tour, Judy Satori, Satori Global Ltd and Avatar Travel, Cairo will make every effort to refund participants as per Avatar Travel’s cancellation policy set out below.

All tour participants must have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical issues and tour disruption, cancellation, or flight issues and divulge medical information that may affect their wellbeing on and enjoyment of the tour.

 

Avatar Travel Cancellation Policy: 

 

After full payment is received, the following cancellation penalties apply in addition to any non-refundable prepaid expenses:

  

 
Tour Two: 26 September - 11 October
 
Nonrefundable deposit / cancellation fee of $2500 USD up to 90 days before
 
Cancellation between 60 days (25 July) and 45 days (13 August) 50% refund.
 
Cancellation between 44 days (14 August) and 30 days (28 August) 25% refund.
 
Cancellation between 29 days (29 August) and 21 days (6 September) 10% refund. 
 
Cancellation after 6 September no refund. 

  

No refund or credit will be issued for unused portions of the trip.

Trip cancellation Insurance is strongly advised.
